Description
Two short terraces of thirteen houses and a shop were built between 1976 and 1978 by Ralph Erskine’s Arkitektkontor, with Vernon Gracie as site architect. The buildings are located on Chirton Wynd in Newcastle upon Tyne. They are constructed of pale modular metric brick on a timber frame, with weatherboarding. The roofs are monopitch and covered in blue metal, supported by plywood box beam purlins.
The houses are generally two storeys high, with number 2 being a single-storey shop that was closed between December 1999 and January 2000. Numbers 4 and 6 are set back, featuring a pergola to number 4 and a curved garden wall to the rear. Numbers 4 to 14 are stepped, while numbers 10 and 12 are not. The eaves are brightly coloured – green on most houses, with number 12 having soft blue eaves. Weatherboarding below the first-floor strip windows is also coloured; numbers 4 to 14 have green, except number 14 which has a brown band, and number 12 which has brown weatherboarding. Yellow metal door hoods are present on numbers 8 to 14, the latter on a side elevation, and include a bird box. Numbers 4 and 6 have red metal hoods to the rear, with blue doors. The rear of number 4 is weatherboarded in green (covering a car parking area), while numbers 10 to 14 have green eaves.
Numbers 16 to 28 are set behind orange retaining walls, alongside a pedestrian route (Chirton Wynd) and a car parking area. These houses are stepped, with numbers 16 and 18, and 24 and 26 forming pairs. The front elevation features bright green weatherboarded eaves and some brown weatherboarding between first-floor windows. Red metal door hoods are on numbers 20 to 28, with the one on number 28 on a side elevation and behind a corner bird box. Number 16 also has a bird box, with a built-in seat to the retaining wall. Fences with prominent triangular tops are attached between each unit. The rear elevation is plain, with brown and green weatherboarded eaves on numbers 18, 10, 24 and 26. All windows are timber, with aluminium opening lights, save for number 28, where the ground floor windows have been renewed in uPVC. A prominent porte cochere of red timber with a plastic sheeted roof is located at the rear, connecting to the retaining wall.
The terraces form a prominent group along the main route through the Chirton area, leading to and from Headlam Green. Their historical context and sources are documented alongside numbers 1 to 75 Dunn Terrace.
