Description
This group of 54 houses set in short linked terraces was built between 1976 and 1978 by Swedish architect Ralph Erskine's practice Arkitektkontor, with Vernon Gracie as site architect, White, Young and Partners as structural engineers, and Shepherd Construction Limited as main contractor.
The buildings are constructed on timber frames with weatherboarding. Red modular metric brick is used on the outer edges of the estate facing Welbeck Road and Bothnal Street, whilst pale modular metric brick is used within the estate. The roofs are blue metal monopitch with plywood box beam purlins. Most buildings are two storeys, with the exception of number 9 Manor House Close, which rises to three storeys, and numbers 10-13 Manor House Close, which are split level.
Numbers 1-8 Manor House Close have distinctive bright green high weatherboarded eaves over a strip of first-floor windows, interrupted only by occasional brown panels, all set on a red brick façade. These feature prominent dividing fences with triangular top sections. Number 4 differs with blue eaves and uPVC windows. Number 9 has brown weatherboarding over the first floor with an enlarged first-floor window serving the living room, a green door hood, red door and brown bird box. Number 1 Manor House Close is linked at first-floor level to number 28 Jubilee Terrace via a bird box. The rear façades are simpler, with blue half weatherboarding visible on the carriageway link to number 28 Jubilee Terrace for numbers 2-4, 7 and 9. Blue door hoods and a good surviving line of red doors are present.
Numbers 10-13 Manor House Close are arranged at right angles with links via bird box and timber carriage arch to number 14, which is attached to number 4 Village Place. This group, together with numbers 1-9 Manor House Close and 5-7 Village Place, encloses a green. Numbers 10-12 are one to two storeys on the sloping site, whilst number 13 rises to two and three storeys. Bird boxes are positioned at each end and between numbers 12 and 13. The uphill side has high eaves of bright green weatherboarding with prominent fences between units topped with triangular sections. The rear features blue doors and narrow strips of weatherboarding above adjoining kitchen windows. A timber link formed of heating pipe covers and a bird box connects numbers 13 and 14.
Number 14 and number 4 Village Place present a brick frontage to the pedestrian way, with a band of brown weatherboarding between first-floor windows and red weatherboarded eaves above on the square side. The return flank of number 4 Village Place has green weatherboarding, a bird box, blue door hood, and a single-storey brick outshut. Blue fences enclose the space. Numbers 5-7 Village Place have blue door hoods to the front and high red eaves weatherboarding to the rear, with brown weatherboarding between first-floor strip windows.
Numbers 1-3 Village Place are attached to number 9 Chirton Wynd, connected via a first-floor weatherboarded brick carriage arch to numbers 5 and 7 Chirton Wynd. All these houses feature red metal door hoods. Numbers 1-3 Village Place and number 9 Chirton Wynd have garden elevations of soft green and blue weatherboarding below first-floor sills, brown weatherboarded bands between first-floor strip windows (continuing as struts between units), and bright green weatherboarded eaves. Bird boxes are positioned at either end. Prominent blue fences and a red seat in green are provided outside. The elevation to Chirton Wynd has blue half weatherboarding with a prominent oriel over the carriage arch. Rear elevations to numbers 5 and 7 (number 9 faces sideways to the road) display brown weatherboarding between first-floor strip windows, end bird boxes, and red eaves with brown struts. Heating pipe covers and bird boxes link numbers 5 and 3 Chirton Wynd. Number 3 has a soft blue weatherboarded frontage to Chirton Wynd with brown weatherboarding between first-floor windows and a red metal door hood. Its garden elevation features brown weatherboarding between windows, blue weatherboarding between them, and red eaves.
Number 1 Chirton Wynd and numbers 18-28 Jubilee Terrace use red brick on the exterior of the estate with pale brick facing inwards. Number 1 has a projecting single-storey outshut beneath a blue metal roof with blue weatherboarding to the gable end, red metal door hoods and red doors. Its garden elevation has red eaves with brown weatherboarding between first-floor strip windows and blue weatherboarded band below. Full weatherboarding appears on numbers 18, 22 and 24. Number 27 is entirely weatherboarded in green with renewed windows. Timber fences between each unit have triangular tops. A brick end wall to number 1 Chirton Wynd has a timber pergola with red metal roof positioned outside it.
All windows are timber with timber sub-frames and aluminium opening lights (mainly sliding), except where otherwise noted. Some doors have been renewed in hardwood where prominent original groups are not documented.
This forms the south-eastern corner of the Chirton neighbourhood, an area of particular complexity and character known for its intricate coloured weatherboarding, linking arches, use of bird boxes, and built-in garden seating and pergolas.
