Description

The accommodation arch over Manor Chare and the railway viaduct extending westward to Pilgrim Street were built in 1849 and around 1890 for the Newcastle, York and Berwick Railway Company and the North Eastern Railway Company. The structure is made of sandstone ashlar, with brick arches forming the viaduct. The rock-faced viaduct features ten brick arches with voussoirs, while the ashlar accommodation arch, also with voussoirs, has flanking pilasters that contain open arches. There is a band at rail bed level on the viaduct and a flat-coped parapet. Both the accommodation arch and the pilasters have a cornice beneath a high coped parapet. The earlier southern half of the structure has concrete reinforcing to the soffits.
