Description

1-9 Brinkburn Lane is a pair of terraces of houses and flats located in Byker, Newcastle upon Tyne. Built between 1972 and 1975 by Ralph Erskine's Arkitektkontor, with Vernon Gracie as the site architect and structural engineering by White, Young and Partners, the buildings feature pale metric modular brick on a timber frame. Nos. 2-4 are finished with blue weatherboarding, while Nos. 1-3 have brown weatherboarding. The roofs are two-way blue metal. The odd-numbered houses have projecting brown porches, and the even-numbered houses have weatherboarded backs that open onto an open square. The properties have timber windows with aluminium opening lights and timber doors with glazed panels, some of which have been replaced with hardwood. The interiors have not been inspected. The design reflects the need for adaptable living spaces in the Byker area, which had an elderly population during the redevelopment in the early 1970s. Many units were built as two flats that could be converted into houses if more family accommodation was needed, particularly at the ends or next to the ends of the terraces.
