Description

The South Postern Tower facing the river and the adjoining curtain wall are part of Newcastle upon Tyne's castle, dating from 1168-78 and the 13th century. The structure is made of coursed squared sandstone. It features a high arched recess with a two-coursed head, which contains a relieving arch above a round-headed arch. There is a barrel-vaulted passage through the wall. The high wall extends to the left and returns to the north, while the wall to the right of the postern has a blocked high arch. At the rear, there is a late 19th-century addition by Crozier in a classical style, which was part of alterations to the Moot Hall. The site is also a scheduled ancient monument.
