Description
Nos. 14-20 on Pilgrim Street are shops and houses that have been converted into offices. They were built around 1837 for Richard Grainger and feature sandstone ashlar with a low-pitched slate roof. The building has four storeys and consists of eight bays, with the outer bays projecting and designed in the Giant Tuscan Order. There are four shops, one of which dates from around 1900, while the others have been renewed or covered over. The end bays feature tripartite first-floor windows set in architraves beneath bracketed cornices, with a single sash window above that has a bracketed sill. The centre bays contain sashes with glazing bars in plain stone reveals, along with bands at the first floor and at the second-floor sill. A continuous entablature runs along the second floor, while the top storey has square windows, a cornice, and a blocking course, along with pilasters that have palmette finials and consoles in the end bays.
