Description
The South African War Memorial, located in Newcastle upon Tyne, is a war memorial dated 1907 and signed by T. Eyre Maciklin, who was both the inventor and sculptor. It features sandstone ashlar construction with a bronze sculpture. The memorial is approached by wide octagonal steps leading to a base that includes a bronze shield, a pictorial low relief panel, and garlands. At the east side, there is a large figure holding an unfurled flag and grasping a tall octagonal tapered column, which bears an inscription honoring the Northumbrian regiments that lost their lives in the South African War from 1899 to 1902. Atop the column stands a heroic-sized winged Victory.
