Description

No. 4 St. Mary's Place East is part of a group of 14 houses, now serving as shops and offices, built in 1830 by John Dobson. The building is constructed from sandstone ashlar with ashlar bases for the brick chimneys, topped with a Welsh slate roof, and is designed in the Tudor style. It features basements, two storeys, and attics, with each house typically having two bays, except for No. 4, which has one bay. In total, there are 27 bays across the group.

The doors have 4-over-4 vertical panels set in Tudor-arched surrounds on the left side of each house, while sash windows are located above, predominantly on the first floor, many of which retain glazing bars. Most upper windows and some attic windows have 20th-century glazing. The right bay of No. 4 has wider sashes on each floor. The building includes floor and eaves strings, and half-dormers are present on the right side and in the projecting left end bay under gables. All openings feature drip-moulds.

The linking parapet, which is continuous with the gable, has blind battlements over the six left houses, with small windows above the remaining houses. The ground floor of Nos. 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, and 9 has been altered for 20th-century shops, and No. 4 St. Mary's Place East includes a garage showroom.
