Description

The Former Newcastle Breweries Offices, built between 1896 and 1900 by Joseph Oswald for Newcastle Breweries Ltd, is a brewery office located on Percy Street in Newcastle upon Tyne. The building features a grey granite plinth and a red sandstone ashlar ground floor, with bright red brick upper floors adorned with red sandstone dressings. It has a roof made of plain tiles and a copper fishscale dome atop a turret. The structure is three storeys high with attics and consists of five bays.

On the left side, there is a double door with a fanlight above, inscribed with "NEWCASTLE BREWERIES LTD" and covered by an art nouveau wrought-iron grille. Long brackets extend from the plinth to the entablature, which is decorated with Jacobean ornament on a pulvinated frieze above the door. The ground floor features four wide, round-headed windows and a central oculus with glazing bars and upper painted ornament. Above the door and in alternating bays are first-floor oriels, with sashes in between that have swagged friezes. The parapets of the oriels become balconies for the second-floor sashes, which are set in moulded stone surrounds. The building is topped with a modillioned cornice, and the shaped gables on the left and over the central bays include oculi and consoles. A corbelled corner turret is located on the right side, and there are tall brick chimneys with ashlar string and cornice.

Inside, the entrance hall features faience, with the stair wall and first-floor hall also decorated in faience. The architraves to the doors have pulvinated friezes and scroll pediments, while many ceilings are adorned with strapwork stucco decoration and deep ornamental stucco friezes. The former board room is mahogany-panelled, showcasing richly-carved mahogany chimney pieces. A marble stair with a wrought-iron balustrade and wide grip handrail leads through the interior. There are frosted glass doors, including a pair marked 'CLERK'S OFFICE' and 'ACCOUNTANT'S OFFICE'.
