Description
This listing describes three short terraces, each consisting of three houses, located in Byker, Newcastle upon Tyne. Built between 1974 and 1976 by Ralph Erskine's Arkitektkontor, with Vernon Gracie as the site architect and structural engineering by White, Young and Partners, the main contractor was Shepherd Construction Limited. The houses feature pale brick and uneven brown weatherboarding on timber frames, with yellow weatherboarded eaves under shallow double-pitched metal roofs. The roofs have plywood box beam purlins and projecting eaves facing the gardens.
The buildings are two storeys tall, with Nos. 1 Headlam Garden and 1 and 4 Felton Green being slightly higher than the others, which have the brown weatherboarding. Prominent projecting downpipes are visible from the eaves. All windows are timber with timber subframes and aluminium opening lights, mainly sliding, except for Nos. 2 and 5 Felton Green, which have been replaced with uPVC. Nos. 1-3 Headlam Garden feature plastic door hoods and red doors, while the Felton Green houses have distinctive yellow eaves with white vertical struts between the first-floor windows, along with plastic door hoods and seats in front.
A retaining wall beside No. 1 Headlam Garden and brown fences are notable features of this group. Nos. 1-3 Headlam Garden and Nos. 1-3 Felton Green enclose a small courtyard. The uneven strips of weatherboarding are a distinctive characteristic of Grace Lee, recognized as one of the most attractive areas in the Byker neighbourhood.
