Description

Three short terraces, each consisting of three houses, are linked by fences and enclose a private courtyard. Built between 1974 and 1976 by Ralph Erskine's Arkitektkontor, with Vernon Gracie as the site architect and structural engineering by White, Young and Partners, the main contractor was Shepherd Construction Limited. The buildings feature pale brick and uneven green weatherboarding on timber frames, with yellow and red weatherboarded eaves, all under shallow double-pitched metal roofs supported by plywood box beam purlins and with projecting eaves facing the gardens.

The terraces are two storeys high, with all the first houses slightly taller and lacking the weatherboarding, but they do have prominent downpipes extending from the projecting eaves. The windows are primarily timber with timber subframes and aluminium opening lights, mostly sliding, except for the windows in No. 2 Winship Garden, which have been replaced with uPVC. The doors are timber with glazed panels, some of which have been renewed in hardwood. The interiors have not been inspected but are understood not to be of special interest.

Brown fences connect the three terraces to create a small semi-private courtyard. Granite kerbs from a previous development on the site are present at the front and rear, particularly along the frontages of Winship and Fairless Garden adjacent to Spires Lane. Fixed seating is a notable feature at both the front and rear of the terraces, which is abundant in this part of the estate.
