Description

Burt Hall is a Trade Union office built in 1895, designed by John W. Dyson for the Northumberland Miners' Association. It features a statue of a miner by Canavan on the gable. The building is constructed of bright red brick and terra cotta, with sandstone ashlar dressings and a graduated Lakeland slate roof adorned with ornamental red ridge tiles. It stands two storeys tall and has two wide bays; the left bay is gabled while the right has two windows. A door located to the right of the gabled bay includes a fanlight within a round-headed surround, and a similar surround frames a three-light window to the left. Above this, there is a wide first-floor oriel flanked by canopied niches. The shaped gable peak features a blind balustrade, pilasters, and a raised pediment that supports the life-size statue of a miner. The building also includes sill, impost, and floor strings, as well as cornices on both floors and ball finials. A plaque on the building notes that it was constructed by the miners to honor Thomas Burt, M.P., for his 27 years of service as general secretary and to commemorate his appointment as secretary of the Board of Trade in 1892. The statue of the miner is modeled after a figure in R. Hedley's painting 'Going Home', which is well-known from lithographs. Burt Hall is listed for its historical interest.
