Description

The Careers Centre, originally Dame Allan's School, was built in 1883 by R.J. Johnson. It features a brick construction with an ashlar plinth, quoins, and dressings, topped with plain tile roofs and lead roofs on the towers. The building is arranged in an almost L-shape with two blocks, consisting of two storeys and nine bays, with a set-back right bay. Flanking the central wide entrance bay are three-storey towers. The entrance is prominent, featuring three open arches supported by two stout Tuscan columns with entasis, and an Ipswich oriel window above.

The towers are adorned with small square windows on the first and third stages, while the second stage has tall sash windows with keystones and segmental heads. The towers also feature a top cornice, a parapet with ball finials, and ogee-hipped roofs with vane finials. On either side of the entrance, there are three additional bays with similar sash windows, and to the right of the set-back bay, there is a shaped gable that contains a niche with a statue of Dame Allan. The main block has a steeply-pitched hipped roof with a gable over the central oriel, and the right return features shaped gables and tall, corniced, panelled chimneys.
