Description
Nos. 1-17 (consecutive), with attached walls, fences, seats, and pergolas form three linked terraces built between 1976 and 1978 by Ralph Erskine's Arkitektkontor, with Vernon Gracie as site architect, White, Young and Partners as structural engineers, and Shepherd Construction Limited as the main contractor. The buildings are constructed from orange modular metric brick on a timber frame with a pale brick facing on the inner side, and weatherboarding. The roofs are monopitch with blue metal sheeting and plywood box beam purlins.
The terraces are two storeys in height. Number 1 is set back on its side return, while Number 2 is set back from the road. Links connect Nos. 6 and 7, and Nos. 13 and 14. Red metal door hoods are present on the outer wall of Nos. 1-6 (Number 1 being on the side). The inner faces feature red eaves with blue struts that extend upwards and form breaks in the continuous strip windows. A green weatherboarded first-floor link joins Nos. 6 and 7, with details including bright green bird boxes and heating casing. Nos. 7-13 have a heavily cranked design, with red metal door hoods on the external elevation. Number 13 includes a first-floor projection over the pavement, featuring a projecting oriel under a blue metal roof that is weatherboarded in green to the rear. The facades facing the rest of the estate have varying eaves treatments—brown weatherboarding to number 7, blue weatherboarding to number 10, and red weatherboarded eaves with blue struts for the rest. Numbers 11 and 12 are stepped up slightly. Windows at Number 9 have been renewed.
A broad timber pergola spanning the road connects the car entrance between Nos. 13 and 14, supported on brick uprights. Number 14 has renewed windows in uPVC and a black door hood. Nos. 15-17 also have red metal door hoods. The rear elevation displays bright green eaves weatherboarding, with green weatherboarding to the lower parts of Nos. 15-17. Windows are generally timber in timber subframes with aluminium opening lights (mostly sliding). Some doors have been renewed in hardwood. The interiors were not inspected.
A wall and fence attached to Number 14 incorporates a built-in seat, with the fence continuing to include a brick tree planter outside Nos. 15 and 16. Number 17 projects forward into the estate. A projecting wall to Number 1 joins a timber pergola forming an arch to the inner gardens with accompanying seats. Brown fencing is located behind Nos. 2-6. A timber pergola with a red pyramidal roof stands in the garden to the rear of Nos. 7-13, backed by brick retaining walls. A similar pergola is outside no. 14 with an attached low wall. Jubilee Terrace forms the eastern perimeter of the estate and is notable for its timber pergolas and detailing.
