Description

The Austin Friary Tower, attached to the John George Joicey Museum, is part of the Austin Friary and dates from the 13th and 16th centuries. It is constructed from large sandstone blocks and stands three storeys high with one bay. The west elevation features a double-chamfered, two-centred arch with a drip mould and a renewed door. The fenestration is irregular, with small square windows on each floor. Inside, there is a stone newel stair, and the first floor's south wall has a double-chamfered, two-centred-arched window, although the tracery has been removed. The exterior door, made of studded planks, has been reused on the ground floor. This level also contains a medieval cross-slab and an effigy of a knight in armour, which were discovered during excavation prior to restoration.
