Description
The Cooperative Wholesale Society Warehouse, built in 1891 and 1900, is located on the Quayside in Newcastle upon Tyne. Designed by T.G. Gueritte of L.G. Mouchel's firm and F.E.L. Harris of C.W.S. Architects, this six-storey building is constructed of reinforced concrete, with an exterior that mimics the appearance of Portland stone. It features a raft foundation to address the marshy site conditions. The design showcases an austere classical style, with a three-bay Giant Order of plain pilasters extending through five storeys, which support a heavily bracketed cornice. The structure rests on a podium with three arches and a cornice. Each bay contains a pair of square windows, with each window divided into nine large pairs, and six pairs on the top floor. Inside, the warehouse has slab floors and beamwork supported by square columns with diagonal spandrels. The top storey has been modified, featuring a barrel vault across the centre with metal strip windows along its base.
