Description
South Shotton Edge Cottage and adjacent outbuildings date from the early 19th century. The building is constructed of squared roughly-tooled stone with cut dressings and has a Welsh slate roof. The house is two storeys high and features three symmetrical bays. It has a central renewed door set in an alternating-block surround, along with renewed 16-pane sash windows that have slightly projecting sills. The gable coping is returned on deep footstones, and there are stepped-and-banded end stacks.
To the left of the house is a contemporary single-storey outbuilding that has two similar windows and boarded double doors on the left side. The left gable has raised reverse-stepped coping and a stepped-and-banded ridge stack. Set back to the far left are a pair of privies with boarded doors.
The cottage was originally built as stables and outbuildings for the Red Lion Inn, with domestic accommodation located on the first floor only.
