Description
Shotton Grange is a house built around 1800, with an early 19th-century rear wing. The addition of a second floor likely coincided with the construction of the west wing, which is dated 1872. The building is made of squared stone with tooled-and-margined dressings and features a Lakeland slate roof. It has three storeys and three bays, arranged symmetrically. Notable architectural details include raised quoins, a plinth, bands at the first and second floors, and a moulded eaves cornice. There are three curved steps leading up to a central six-panel door topped with a geometrical fanlight. The windows are margined sashes, and all openings are framed in raised alternating-block surrounds. The hipped roof has two stepped-and-corniced ridge stacks. To the left, there is a slightly set-back two-storey, one-bay west wing that has similar window designs and a datestone on its left return. To the right, there is a single-storey bay added in 1948. At the rear, there is a two-storey wing with 16- and 20-pane sash windows. Originally, Shotton Grange served as a coaching inn on the Great North Road. The 20th-century extensions flanking the north end of the rear wing are not considered of special interest.
