Description

This listing describes three linked terraces of houses and one shop located at 66-92 Raby Street in Byker, Newcastle upon Tyne. The first section, comprising Nos. 66-80, was built between 1972 and 1975 by Ralph Erskine's Arkitektkontor, with Vernon Gracie as the site architect and White, Young and Partners as the structural engineer. The remaining section was constructed from 1978 to 1979, also by Ralph Erskine's Arkitektkontor, with Shepherd Construction as the main contractor.

The buildings feature pale metric modular brick on timber frames, with vertical dark blue cladding on no. 66 and on Nos. 78 and 80. There is a band of timber cladding at the eaves level on Nos. 82-90. The roofs are made of contrasting metal and are supported by plywood box beam purlins. The structures are two storeys high and are situated on a steeply sloping site. The shop front of no. 66 Raby Street was boarded up at the time of the survey. Notable features include a projecting green timber downpipe and bird box on no. 82, as well as projecting porches in brown timber with blue metal roofs on Nos. 64-80. Nos. 92 Raby Street and Nos. 4 and 6 Priory Place have bright green eaves cladding, while no. 2 has white eaves. Nos. 4 and 6 also feature projecting brick porches with sloping blue metal roofs. The windows are timber framed with timber surrounds and aluminium sliding opening lights, and the doors are timber with glazed panels, many of which have been renewed in hardwood. The interiors of the buildings were not inspected.
