Description
The tomb of Henry Clasper, located about 13 metres north of the Church of St. Mary in Whickham, dates from around 1870. Henry Clasper was an oarsman and boat-builder from Derwenthaugh who died in 1870. The tomb is made of sandstone and features a statue of Clasper, created by G. Burn MSA, set on a square pedestal with a plinth, string, and cornice that bear inscribed panels. It is surrounded by four pillars with bands and carved capitals, supporting a tall octagonal canopy adorned with cusped arches and crocketed gablets. Clasper was a well-known champion, and racing on the River Tyne was a popular spectator sport during his time.
