Description

The Kell Tomb, located 3 metres west of the north transept of the Church of St. Mary, dates from around 1824. It serves as the burial site for the Kell family, including Ebenezer, who died in 1781, with burials continuing until 1849. The tomb features a sandstone slab resting on five pedestals. Each pedestal is four-sided and curved, adorned with foliage decoration. The slab includes a fluted frieze and three flowers on each side, and it bears the arms of the town of Newcastle. The Kell family was known for owning quarries that produced the famous 'Newcastle' grindstones.
