Description
The Dawes tomb, located about 19 meters north of the transept of the Church of St. Mary, is a Grade II listed structure. It serves as the burial site of Richard Dawes, who was the headmaster of Newcastle Grammar School and passed away in 1766. The tomb features a sandstone headstone topped with a trophy above the inscription, and a natural basalt boulder serves as the grave cover. An inset bronze plaque on the grave cover reads: "THE BURIAL PLACE OF RICHARD DAWES M.A. AUTHOR OF THE CELEBRATED WORK INTITLED MISCELLANEA CRITICA. LET NO MAN MOVE HIS BONES." The boulder and inscription were placed in 1822 by John Hodgson, the rector of St. Mary's.
