Description
The Hepburn Tomb, located 32 metres south and 29 metres east of the transept of the Church of St. Mary, is a tomb dating from around 1864. It is constructed from granite and sandstone. The tomb features a stepped base made of sandstone and grey granite, which supports a tapered grave slab. This slab includes a plinth, cornice, and pediment made of pink granite. The inscription reads, "SHORTER HOURS AND BETTER EDUCATION FOR MINERS." This memorial was erected by the miners of Northumberland and Durham in memory of Thomas Hepburn, who founded the first successful miners' union in the area and died in 1864.
