Description

The Fox Almshouses were built in 1897 by Mr. Fox, located opposite his brewery in Smirke's Yard. This charming row consists of 13 cottages featuring large gables that slightly project forward. Constructed from brick, they have high tiled roofs and 12 tall chimneys with spurs on each side. Each gable has paired doorways at the center, with shaped lights above, and 4-light wooden transom and mullion windows on either side, topped with Tudor arch heads. The gables are half-timbered, displaying alternating rectangular and diagonal patterns, with small attic lights and decorative bargeboards.

At the eastern end, No. 67, which is styled similarly, appears to continue the design of the almshouses. It lacks a gable on the south side but features a single door with a small window to the right. The half-timbered gable facing the street is jettied and supported by a shallow 6-light bay and end brackets. A tablet set in the gable, flanked by female herms, reads "The Fox Alms House 1897. Built and endowed by Henry Fox of Norton."

The former Meeting Room, now No. 14, is located on the south side of the garden opposite Nos. 5 and 6. This single-storey building is designed in a similar style, with a projecting gabled center that includes an 8-light window, two of which serve as a doorway with shaped lights above. It also has five-light bays on the east and west sides supporting jettied gable ends, and is constructed of brick with a tiled roof and a spurred chimney. The listing also includes the offices and walls to the rear alley.
