Description
The Church of St John the Baptist is a Grade I listed building located on Church Road in Egglescliffe. This church primarily features a Perpendicular style but includes a Norman south doorway and a 13th-century chancel arch, indicating it was built on the site of an earlier Saxon church. The structure is made of ashlar and comprises a west tower, a south porch, an aisle, a nave, a chancel, and a later north vestry extension. The west tower and the north wall are battlemented, and there is a five-light traceried window on the east side.
Inside, the church boasts significant 17th-century woodwork, including the roof, pews, screen, choir stalls, panelling, and a font cover, all associated with Bishop Cosin of Durham. There are also two 14th-century effigies and wall monuments from the 17th and 18th centuries. An early stone effigy of a knight can be found in the south porch.
