Description

The Egglescliffe War Memorial is a tall stone structure located on Egglescliffe Bank, approximately 50 meters northwest of the Church of St John the Baptist, which is a Grade I-listed building, and it overlooks the River Tees. The memorial is designed in the shape of a Latin cross that rises from a moulded collar atop a tapering, octagonal shaft. This shaft is set on an elaborate rectangular plinth, which features scrolled sides to the north and south and has a broad base. The plinth itself rests on a two-stepped base that is half-round at the front. The entire memorial is elevated on a paved platform that is enclosed by railings and accessed by a set of four steps on the east side.

Near the bottom of the shaft, the years 1914 and 1919 are carved in low relief within a small cartouche. The original list of names commemorating those who served is incised into the front face of the plinth but is covered by a black stone plaque. This plaque records the names of those who served in the First and Second World Wars under the dates 1914-1918 and 1939-1945. Below this, a narrow frieze is inscribed with the words: "TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN MEMORY OF THE MEN OF THIS PARISH WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR." The dates 1939 and 1945 are also carved in low relief on the chamfered step of the plinth’s base, flanking the names of those from the Second World War. Additionally, a black stone plaque on the face below reads: "TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN MEMORY OF THE MEN OF THIS PARISH WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WARS."

The black stone plaques, the enclosure railings, the pavement, and the steps on the east side are not included in the listing.
