REDCAR KIRKLEATHAM NZ 52 SE 4/57 Newcomen tombstone, c.8m north-west-of Church of St. Cuthbert G.V. II

Tombstone, 1887, to Arthur Newcomen d.1848, and Teresa Newcomen d.1887. Smooth sandstone. Plain 3-stepped Latin Calvary cross on battered square plinth. Epitaphs on steps and plinth. Teresa Newcomen founded the Christ Church (Coatham Road, Redcar, q.v.) Sisterhood, the first Anglican religious community in the north, who from 1854 provided a hospital and medical services for the people of Middlesbrough and sent trained workers to found or help medical services in other industrial areas. Included for historic interest.
