Description
The Newcomen tombstone, located approximately 8 meters north-west of the Church of St. Cuthbert, dates from 1887 and commemorates Arthur Newcomen, who died in 1848, and Teresa Newcomen, who died in 1887. It is made of smooth sandstone and features a plain three-stepped Latin Calvary cross set on a battered square plinth. Epitaphs are inscribed on the steps and the plinth. Teresa Newcomen was the founder of the Christ Church Sisterhood on Coatham Road in Redcar, which was the first Anglican religious community in the north. From 1854, they provided a hospital and medical services for the people of Middlesbrough and sent trained workers to establish or assist medical services in other industrial areas. The tombstone is included for its historic interest.
