Description
The Gaunt tombstone, located approximately 10 metres north of the Church of St. Cuthbert, is a Grade II listed structure. It commemorates four members of the Gaunt family who passed away between 1841 and 1893. Made of painted sandstone, the tombstone features a tall, slender pedestal with a plain bud finial on a hyperboloid stem and a moulded base. The east face bears an epitaph for John Gaunt, describing him as a merchant and cloth manufacturer, formerly of Armley near Leeds, who was trusted for twenty-one years at the Leeds coloured cloth hall and was the first founder of the salmon fishery at Coatham. The other three faces contain epitaphs for other family members. At the time of resurvey, much of the paint was missing. The tombstone is included for its historic interest.
