Description

This milepost, located 50 metres north-west of the Hastings Arms, is likely from the late 19th century and was made by Smith Paterson of Blaydon. It is constructed from cast iron and painted red with black figures. The milepost stands 0.85 metres tall and features a faceted twin-faced oval top on a fluted shaft, which has a maker's plate above a decorative ring. The raised lettering indicates the distances to Morpeth and North Shields, stating "MORPETH / N. SHIELDS 10 6½ MILES."
