Description

These are a group of cottage homes for children, built in 1903 by Leeson for the Newcastle Board of Guardians. They were later used as a police headquarters and college. The buildings are constructed with cavity walls in stretcher bond brick, with some areas pebbledashed and painted, and have Welsh slate roofs. They consist of two pairs of semi-detached houses in a Domestic Revival style.

Former Block 5-6 is consciously asymmetrical. This block is two storeys high and six bays wide. Number 5 features a door with a cornice and a two-light window above, set under a gable, with a canted bay window to the left. Number 6 has a door with a segmental head and a canted bay window over the door, with a bay window to the right. The roof is hipped with four gables of different sizes, and a large Flemish gable is situated above the right bay. There are three corniced stacks. A recent extension to the right is not considered to be of architectural significance.

Former Block 7-8 is largely symmetrical, with the doorways being the exceptions. Number 7 has a door set within a two-storey porch, while Number 8 has a canted oriel window above its door. Single-storey bay windows are situated in the outer bays. Windows are in moulded wood frames and consist of either two or three lights. The roof has bargeboarded cross gables over the outer bays, and smaller gables over the central bays. A hipped roof with three corniced stacks completes the design.
