Description

A complex of workshops for cottage homes, built in 1903 for the Newcastle Board of Guardians and later used as workshops for the police. The buildings are constructed with cavity walls in a stretcher bond brick pattern, and have a Welsh slate roof. They comprise three ranges arranged in a U-shaped plan, covering a single storey and five bays by three. The windows are two-light sash windows with 12 panes in each light, set within moulded wooden surrounds. The roof is hipped, with two corniced stacks. There are two boarded doors at the front, and a pair of boarded double doors at the rear. The buildings are listed for their group value and historical interest as a rare example of industrial training facilities for boys in care.
