Description
The Roman Catholic Church of St Robert, built in 1850, is constructed from rock-faced stone and features a Lakeland slate roof, showcasing an Early English style. The church includes a porch-tower with a spire, a nave, a chancel, and a vestry.
The porch-tower has a two-storey square lower stage, which features a multi-moulded, pointed-arched doorway, angle buttresses with niches containing saints, and lancet windows on the first floor. The corners are broached, leading to a high bell stage with a tall lancet window on each side and triple-shafted columns at the angles, topped with gablets. The tower culminates in a tall octagonal needle spire.
The six-bay nave contains lancet windows under labels with head stops, and there are buttresses between each bay. The west end features an arched door, above which are seven stepped lancets that alternate between open and blank, with shafts and shaft rings.
The chancel is two bays long and includes a three-light Decorated east window. Attached to the chancel is a single-storey vestry connected by a short linking passage, which has a Decorated three-light window flanked by two saints and niches.
Inside, the church boasts an open timber roof supported by king posts and arched braces.
