Description
Yont the Cleugh Farmhouse, dated 1771 and featuring the initials W.T. on a stone above the door, is built onto a bastle house from the late 16th century or early 17th century. An outbuilding to the east, which is now part of the house, dates from the early 19th century. The farmhouse is constructed of squared stone with tooled dressings, while the left return is made of brick. It has a Hardrow tile roof, and the bastle is made of large rubble. The outbuilding is built of coursed rubble with tooled and margined dressings and has a slate roof.
The house is two storeys high and has three symmetrical bays. There are two steps leading up to a central four-panel door set in a raised stone surround, with a datestone above it. To the right of the datestone is a re-set roll-moulded jamb, likely from the bastle door. The late 19th-century sash windows are set in older stone surrounds, and there are brick stacks at each end of the house.
The left return of the house is built over the end wall of the bastle, featuring massive quoins, and the side wall of the bastle remains intact to a height of 2 meters, although it has no features. The former outbuilding to the right has one wide bay and one ground floor window in a stone surround. The left return of the house shows the original bastle wall at the base, which has a blocked central byre doorway. The right return has a stable door with alternating jambs and a 20th-century window above it. The rear elevation includes an outshut to the house and various openings.
