Description

No. 5, in Longhirst Village, is a house dating from around 1880, but incorporating earlier building materials. It is constructed of tooled-and-margined ashlar, with a slate roof. The house is two storeys high and has a symmetrical design with two wide bays. The central doorway has been renewed and sits beneath an overlight, with paired sash windows on either side. The upper windows are renewed 16-pane sashes within half-dormers featuring ornamental bargeboards. All windows are set within chamfered surrounds. The roof verges project over the eaves, and there are corniced end stacks. Originally, the building served as the village police house. It is included on the heritage list for its group value.
