Description
Chapel House, also known as The Priest House, is a former Roman Catholic chapel and priest's house that has been converted into a residential home. It was built in the later 18th century for the Haggerston family. The building is constructed of ashlar stone and features a roof made of pantiles and concrete tiles, along with old brick chimneys. It is divided into two sections.
On the left side, the house has two storeys plus attics and consists of two bays. There is a doorway on the right side that is set within a 20th-century porch. Above the doorway is a Gothick window with intersecting glazing bars, and to the left are two 12-pane sash windows. The roof is very steeply pitched and has ridge and end stacks.
On the right side is the chapel, which includes a contemporary lean-to and a two-storey vestry in front. The vestry features a six-panel door and a boarded-up window above it. To the right of the vestry are two pointed-arched windows set in raised stone surrounds, and the chapel has a steeply-pitched gabled roof with two similar windows at the rear.
Inside the house, there is an imperial staircase with sturdy stick balusters and octagonal newels, featuring a ramped and moulded handrail. The staircase rises in one flight and then divides into two. The interior also includes six-panel doors set in panelled reveals and panelled shutters.
