Description
The Rotunda at Haggerston Castle is a Grade II listed structure that, along with the Tower, is part of the remains of a house rebuilt between 1893 and 1897 by architect R. Norman Shaw for Thomas Leyland. The rest of the house was demolished in 1933. The building is constructed of ashlar stone, and its roof is not visible. It is designed in the Baroque style and consists of one tall storey. The entrance features a pedimented doorway with a Gibbs surround and a pulvinated frieze. There are large nine-pane fixed windows with projecting moulded sills and prominent triple keystones. Above each window, there is an oculus set within an architrave. Bold pilasters with banded rustication are positioned between each bay.
The interior is also faced in ashlar and exhibits rustication throughout. Attached giant Tuscan columns support segmental arches that have coffered soffits, and the ceiling is shallowly domed.
