Description
The Tower at Haggerston Castle is a Grade II listed structure that forms part of the remains of a house rebuilt between 1893 and 1897 by architect R. Norman Shaw for Thomas Leyland. The rest of the house was demolished in 1933. The tower is constructed of ashlar and features a very tall and slender L-plan design. On the north side, there is a round-headed doorway at ground level. The main tower includes elongated canted oriel windows on each side at the top and is topped with moulded battlements.
Adjacent to the main tower is a slightly higher stair tower that rises to 12 storeys and has small windows with chamfered surrounds. The basement is brick-vaulted. This tower served a dual purpose as both a water tower and a belvedere.
