Description

The stables at Haggerston Castle, built in 1908 for Thomas Leyland, are a stable block featuring scored stucco with ashlar dressings and a Welsh slate roof. The structure is arranged in four ranges around a courtyard and consists of two storeys with seven bays. It has a boldly-moulded plinth and rusticated quoins. The central carriage arch is tall, rusticated, and pedimented, with a date panel in the pediment. Ground floor windows are casements with keyed alternating-block surrounds. In the second and sixth bays, iron stairs on rusticated stone bases lead to boarded doors, which also have alternating-block surrounds and quintuple keystones beneath dormers. The first-floor windows were enlarged in the mid-20th century. The building features an eaves cornice and a hipped roof, topped with a central clock turret that has an ogee lead roof and a vane.

The courtyard interior is particularly notable and well-preserved. All doors feature quintuple keystones, and all windows are set in keyed, raised alternating-block surrounds. The side ranges each contain five bays of carriage arches, with two elliptical arches flanking a higher round arch. In the center of the yard, there is a shelter supported by four round columns, topped with a shallow pyramidal glazed roof that has a louvred vent at the apex.
