Description

The Lady Jerningham Monument is a statue erected in 1908, designed by Hubert Jerningham and Walter Ingram, and sculpted by O. P. Penachini. It is made of white marble and stands on a grey granite base. The monument is located within the scheduled medieval and post-medieval fortifications at Berwick upon Tweed, positioned on an elevated site above the River Tweed.

The life-size statue depicts a seated woman in simplified Edwardian dress, resting on a rock with two dogs beside her. One dog, the larger of the two, looks up at her with its paw on her knee, while the smaller dog has its back against her hand. The front face of the base features an inscription in black lead letters that reads: "ANNIE/LADY JERNINGHAM/OF LONGRIDGE TOWERS, BERWICK UPON TWEED/OBIT 9 OCT. 1902/PRESENTED TO THE TOWN OF BERWICK UPON TWEED BY/SIR HUBERT JERNINGHAM, K.C.M.G./LATE AND LAST MEMBER FOR THE BOROUGH."

On the north face, there is a metal panel with raised lettering stating: "THIS MEMORIAL WAS OFFERED TO AND ACCEPTED BY/THE TOWN COUNCIL/OF BERWICK UPON TWEED./1903/G.F. STEVEN, ESQ, MAYOR/G WEATHERSTON ESQ, SHERIFF/AND ERECTED/1908, FRANK EDMINSON ESQ MAYOR/JAMES LESLIE ESQ SHERIFF." The south face features another metal panel with the inscription: "YET IN THESE EARS TILL HEARING DIES/ONE SLOW BELL WILL SEEM TO TOLL/THE PASSING OF THE SWEETEST SOUL/THAT EVER LOOKED WITH HUMAN EYES/TENNYSON: IN MEMORIAM." Finally, the rear of the statue base notes: "DESIGNED BY HUBERT JERNINGHAM 1903/SKETCHED BY WALTER INGRAM 1904/EXECUTED BY O. P. PENACHINI 1906."
