Description
Scotsgate is a Grade I listed structure that forms part of the town fortifications. Originally built in the Elizabethan era, it was altered in 1815 and again in 1858. The building features high, plain stone walls that are interrupted by three arches: a large segmental arched entrance that spans the Great North Road, and two round arched entrances that provide access to footpaths, all constructed with plain voussoirs. The hinges for a former gate are still present. Additionally, there is a round arch on the north side, which has a flight of steps leading up to Greenside Avenue and the Town Walls. The site is scheduled as an ancient monument.
