Description
The inscribed stone, dating from the early 19th century, is located about 60 metres south of Hauxley Hall. It is a rectangular sandstone block measuring 0.70 metres by 0.50 metres and standing 1.30 metres high. The north face features an incised inscription that reads:
"This Portion of the Hauxley Property was redeemed to its Hereditary Course By the zeal and exertions of the Rev. Joseph Cook of Newton Hall Through the Medium of a Suit In the Court of Chancery y Commenced Jan 1798 Terminated May 1809."
It is noted that the inscription contains an error; this field was not originally part of the Widdrington family's estate but was purchased by them in 1762 from Kirton's mortgagees.
