Description

The British Rail East Coast Main Line Viaduct over the River Aln is a railway viaduct built between 1848 and 1849 by Robert Stephenson for the York, Newcastle and Berwick Railway. It is constructed from rock-faced stone featuring rock-faced-and-margined voussoirs, ashlar dressings, and brick soffits. The viaduct consists of 18 segmental arches, with all piers having chamfered plinths and stepped imposts. Two rivet piers are designed with bowed cutwaters that have stepped domed tops. The structure also includes broad end pilasters and a moulded top cornice.
