Description
This is a chimney built in the third quarter of the 19th century for Lord Armstrong, located on a hilltop west of the B6341, 420 metres northwest of Cragside Park House. It is constructed from squared stone and features a square stack that stands 2.5 metres high, though the coping has fallen off.
This chimney, along with another lower down the hill, was part of a sophisticated ventilation system for Lord Armstrong's conservatory. A fire lit at the base of each chimney would draw smoky air up a long underground flue, keeping the heating apparatus below the conservatory free from smoke.
The chimney is included in the listing for its historical interest.
