Description
The roadside wall to the west and north of Cragside Park House dates from the third quarter of the 19th century. It is constructed from snecked stone with cut dressings. The wall features tooled-and-margined monolithic arched piers at the yard entrance, leading into a 3-metre high wall with flat coping that steps downhill. On either side of a second gateway, the wall ramps down and includes similar piers. There is a boarded door, and a 2-metre high wall with unstepped coping arches over another boarded door leading to an outbuilding. The gateway to the house is marked by square ashlar piers with chamfered bases and low pyramidal caps, which support boarded double gates. A carved panel depicting an Armstrong trebuchet is located on the north pier, along with a 'VR' letterbox in the adjacent wall. This structure is included for its group value.
