Description
The fernery, located to the northeast of the conservatory at Cragside Lodge, dates from the third quarter of the 19th century and was built for Lord Armstrong. The exterior walls are rendered, while the interior features unshaped gritstone boulders. The building has a rectangular shape on the outside, but internally it consists of two irregular enclosures with grottoes at the corners and archways between them and at the eastern end. Originally, the fernery was covered by a hinged glazed roof, which was part of a larger glasshouse complex.
