Description

Tumbleton Ram House is a pumphouse built around 1866 for Lord Armstrong, located on the west side of Debdon Burn at the foot of Tumbleton Dam. The structure is made of rock-faced stone with rock-faced and margined dressings, topped with a 20th-century corrugated iron roof. The south elevation is divided into two parts: on the left is the gabled end of the pumphouse featuring a three-light mullioned window and a slit window above it, along with a boarded door on the right return. To the right is a lower structure that has a doorway and two two-light windows on the right return; this part once supported a header tank, which has since been removed.

The hydraulic ram was used to pump spring water to a reservoir above Cragside House, supplying domestic water and powering the main lift and turbines for kitchen and laundry equipment, as well as the conservatories at Cragside Park House. The building was undergoing restoration at the time of the survey.
