Description
This building is a bastle, dating from the late 16th century or early 17th century, located 15 metres north of Hesleywell Farmhouse. It is constructed of heavy rubble with long, roughly-shaped quoins and has a 20th-century asbestos roof. The south elevation, facing the farmyard, is two storeys high with two wide bays. There is a boarded door left of centre in a stop-chamfered frame, set in an inserted opening. To the right, there is an original doorway with a monolithic triangular head that is now blocked, with a small window inserted. Above and to the left, there are traces of an original first-floor door, with a blocked slit to the left. The gabled left return features a blocked basement slit with a chamfered set back above, while the rear shows ground and first-floor slits along with a later 9-pane fixed window on the first floor to the left. Inside, there are two original principal-rafter roof trusses with slightly arched collars, two levels of purlins, and a diagonally-set ridge, featuring notched multi-pegged joints. This indicates unusually sophisticated carpentry for the area.
