Description

Long Row is a terrace of estate cottages built in 1841, although it likely incorporates some 18th-century materials. The cottages are constructed from roughly-tooled stone with tooled-and-margined quoins and dressings, topped with Welsh slate roofs, and designed in a Tudor style. The terrace features one storey with attics and two storeys with attics, arranged in a pattern of three, one, and three bays.

The slightly-projecting central tower has a long window with an 8-pane casement above a 24-pane sash, flanked by 18-pane sashes, all beneath a stepped common hoodmould. Above this, there is a date panel featuring the Grey crest and motto, flanked by 5-pane casements, also under a common hoodmould. Below the parapet, a moulded string runs along the length of the building, with the central gable containing a 2-light mullioned window that has pigeon openings. The side gables are coped and feature end stacks.

The side ranges include three renewed part-glazed doors set under flattened 4-centred arches within square frames. Ground-floor windows are 2-light with small-paned casements, while the upper floors have 8-pane sash windows in gabled half-dormers. All openings have chamfered surrounds, with ground-floor openings featuring hoodmoulds. The eaves cornice is chamfered, and all gables have pitched coping on moulded kneelers. The end and ridge stacks are stepped and corniced, topped with twin octagonal shafts.

The rear elevation of the tower displays 18th-century masonry and includes a 19th-century attached turret with a boarded door and a pent slab roof. It is suggested that the tower may have originally served as a dovecote before the cottages were constructed. The flat-roofed rear outshuts of the cottages are not of special interest.
