Description
Kirkville, originally a Presbyterian Church and later used as a school, was built in 1722. The building is constructed of brick in English Garden Wall Bond with ashlar dressings, and features random rubble at the rear. There are later additions made of snecked stone and a Welsh slate roof.
The older parts of the building, which are two stories high, are located at the rear, while a single-storey later addition projects on the right. The older section has rusticated quoins and two large round-headed windows with moulded imposts and architraves. To the left, there is a single-storey lean-to brick addition that reuses the original quoins and architrave, with a 20th-century window above in the original architrave. The roof is gabled with kneelers, and there is a 19th-century bellcote on the right gable.
On the left return, there are two 24-pane margined sash windows. The right return features two blocked doors in architraves and two similar windows on the first floor. The later addition has three bays and a gabled porch on the left. The windows were boarded up at the time of the survey, and the gabled roof has kneelers and a corniced stack at the left end.
This building was constructed for the Reverend John Horsley, who authored Britannia Romana. It is included partly for its historical interest and was noted to be empty and in poor repair at the time of the survey.
