Description
This is a Roman altar made of stone, located on the lawn immediately south of Staward Manor. The altar features a moulded top and base, with one side displaying a bull's head carved in relief. The opposite side has a weathered inscription that reads: I.O.M. O.H. 1111 GALL PRAEST L 11 GIVS PVDEN PRAEFCT RAM POSVIT V V S. The altar was removed in the 20th century from the ruins of the supposed gatehouse at Staward Pele, where it had been reused as an angle quoin.
